Omarion Hampton’s Role Changes with the Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton, selected with the No. 22 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, has seen a notable decrease in his playing time this season. Despite starting strong with a career-high 23 carries in Week 2, his snap count dropped to 20 in Week 5, the least among his teammates Kimani Vidal and Keaton Mitchell. Despite the reduction in snaps, Coach Jim Harbaugh remains confident in Hampton’s abilities, praising his performance across all game phases.
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, hired in January, has adapted the team’s strategy, leading to a varied distribution of play among the three running backs. McDaniel pointed out the strength in having a trio of running backs with diverse skills, which complicates preparation for opponents. He emphasized that the changes in running back usage are based on weekly game dynamics and are not a reflection on Hampton’s capabilities.
Looking ahead, Hampton remains the starter. However, McDaniel recognized a need to better utilize the running back room’s collective strengths. Both Vidal and Mitchell have seen increases in their playtime, contributing significantly in recent games. Hampton’s role may be evolving, but he is still a vital part of the Chargers’ offense.
